Prinovis: Efficient Optimization of the Printing Process
In addition to environmentally friendly paper manufacture, further improvements to the printing process of magazines and newspapers is an important issue for Gruner + Jahr. In the summer of 2005, the former G+J printing plants in Itzehoe and Dresden became part of the PRINOVIS Joint Venture. In comparison with the rest of the industry, PRINOVIS printing plants have very high ecological standards and it was thus possible for considerable progress to be made with regard to resource efficiency, energy consumption and CO2 emission. The following figure and table

show the material and energy consumption figures of the PRINOVIS printing plants in recent years up to 2005. The data prove that the values for specific power consumption and CO2 emission per printed surface clearly lie below those of the industry as a whole. PRINOVIS is planning to set up further modern plants for power and heat supply, meaning that the specific power consumption of the printing plants will further decrease in the future.
PRONOVIS' exemplary commitment to the environment is also proven by the independent certificates and awards it has received. In 2000, PRINOVIS Itzehoe became the first German printing plant to introduce an integrated quality and environment management program. Since 2005, the printing plant in Dresden has also adhered to the two international standards DIN EN ISO 9001 and 14 001. PRINOVIS has made this compulsory and has implemented it in all locations associated with the group.
PRINOVIS Itzehoe was awarded the renowned "Umweltfreundlicher Betrieb" (Environmentally Friendly Business) prize by the Studien- und Fördergemeinschaft der schleswig-holsteinischen Wirtschaft for ongoing improvements in the areas of environmental protection and energy saving in June 2006. The panel claimed that PRINOVIS Itzehoe had clearly proved that economic and ecologic performance are not mutually exclusive and can complement one another in a meaningful way.
In addition to this, PRINOVIS, as the first German gravure printing plant, meets the strict requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC ). The FSC certificate was issued to all German PRINOVIS locations in April. The certification of PRINOVIS Liverpool followed in May. With this certificate, environmentally friendly and FSC-certified production is audited and guaranteed within the entire PRINOVIS group. Furthermore, PRINOVIS will produce its own brochures and the staff magazine in accordance with the FSC guidelines.
The objective of the FSC is to contribute to improvements in worldwide forest cultivation. As part of this process, the FSC can be seen as a platform where representatives with various interests in forestry can meet together to reach agreements on what constitutes responsible forestry. Cultivation standards, and mechanisms for marketing forest products manufactured according to these standards, are developed as a result of these agreements. The most important instrument in the marketing of such products is the labeling of these products with the FSC seal.
