Gruner + Jahr: Germany´s Biggest Magazine Publisher
Though Gruner + Jahr (established in 1965) is the youngest of Germany´s big magazine publishing houses, it has long led
the field of German publishing. In 2004, Gruner + Jahr generated revenues of €2.44 billion and counted 11 000 employees.
A comparison shows the dynamic growth that resulted in these figures: In 1984, Gruner + Jahr published 21 titles in three
countries; in 2005, it published 260 titles in more than 20 countries. And there´s no end in sight to the growth - the
company is still on an expansionist course.
Gruner + Jahr has at least one leading title in nearly every single magazine segment. STERN plays a leading role in the
news segment, BRIGITTE is the first lady of women´s magazines, and it´s hard to imagine the lifestyle segment without
SCHÖNER WOHNEN and ESSEN & TRINKEN. CAPITAL, IMPULSE, BÖRSE ONLINE and FINANCIAL TIMES DEUTSCHLAND set the tone in business
publications, ELTERN does so in the parenting segment and GALA in people magazines. GEO, P.M. and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
dominate the popular-science sector. Since taking over the majority of shares in Motor Presse Stuttgart, Gruner + Jahr
also commands leading positions in the automotive (AUTO MOTOR und SPORT), motorcycle and aviation sector. MEN´S HEALTH
rounds out the portfolio with an innovative lifestyle title for men.
All magazines cater to attractive target groups and provide the industry with excellent advertising platforms. In the
advertising business, Gruner + Jahr sets high standards by adopting innovative sales approaches and providing best service
to agencies and advertising customers. Together, G+J and Motor Presse have more advertising revenues than any other
German publisher, a market leadership that G+J has defended for years. In addition to its conventional publishing business,
Gruner + Jahr does business with printing plants: it owns 37.45 percent of the newly formed company Prinovis, Europe´s
biggest illustration printing group.
